What is the limitation of Rapid Prototyping in terms of cavity size? I would like to build a few 14mm diameter plastic disks with a hole in the centre. I would like to know how small the hole diameter can go if I build the disks using rapid prototyping e.g. 1mm, 100 microns etc. Thank you.

What plastic tire design gets the best traction on tile? Its a project for school we have to design a car and tires from a rapid prototyping machine and we have to run them on an electric motor but it will be on tile i don't think it will have very good traction if i just make a regular tire.

Is it possible to create an stl file from surface models in autocad 2006, or only Rhino? I can create stl files for rapid prototyping from solid models in Autocad, but I would like the option of creating stl files from surface models in Autocad. I have been told that my best bet is to switch to Rhino (another CAD application) because Autocad just can't do it. Is that true? Can Autocad export surface models to any other format than stl that I might be able to use in my Roland Modela4 software, such as .3ds? Nigel

Going from Engineering to Special Education and worried!? I am currently a Biomedical Engineering student. I LOVE MATH, science, some physics, and all analytical things. However, I cannot stand engineering. Why? I don't know. I don't want to work for a big corporation all my life. I don't want to work in a male dominated atmosphere (I had a job at a rapid prototyping center and the males were horrible to work with- i.e. "Oop, go do that with Sophie, she's a girl." "Why are females so ______?" I always wanted to go into a field where I could help people who really need it (the underdogs)- originally I wanted to go to med school and work at a free clinic. Money is NOT an issue. I really want to work with kids who have special needs- give them the care and attention and good teaching they need. But I am SO SCARED that I am going to miss calculus, and thermodynamics, etc, etc. How can I incorporate these things into my life without a career in them?

Art, Craft, and Technology; the conceptual question? I have an interest in the relationship between art and technology, especially within the "craft" mediums. Although there has been much debate over the questions of tradition vs innovation, mostly in terms of material and process, what I don't see being pinned-down is the conceptual implications of technology really being considered in a comparable light to the traditional relationships concept and art-craft have explored. It seams that technologies such as CAD, rapid prototyping, and alt materials have become all the rage, but why? What beyond the superior production capabilities, wonderment, and ease is the reason tech is being so embraced? Believe me, I am not an ardent traditionalist, I want to believe in the power of technology to be a significant consideration in placing art in context with contemporary society, but I just can't quite put my finger on the reason behind the reasons we are embracing it so extensively. There has to be sophisticated implication, what are yur thoughts?
